It is no secret that the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in an unprecedentedly high demand for hospital services. For Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trusts, the pandemic put a strain on clinical resources and staff as well as resulting in restructured priorities and a disruption to some of the Trust’s educational routines.

In particular, junior clinicians missed out on training opportunities and more widely, the Trust wanted to get up to speed with the evidence shift over the last two years, concerning Covid-19, and the changes to clinical practice across all specialities.

In order to support clinical training in the wake of the pandemic, Barking, Havering and Redbridge used a grant provided by Health Education England to adopt the UpToDate clinical decision support system from Wolters Kluwer.

This case study explores how the clinical decision support system helped the Trust rebuild training and focus on health equalities.
