‘I went for a health MOT at a London wellbeing clinic – I was surprised to find an unnoticed health problem’ – My London

It’s all too often that we might feel a little bit off, like something’s not quite right, but not bother to go to see our GP because it doesn’t feel like a big deal and isn’t worth the hassle. Equally, we might just be going through life thinking nothing’s wrong, that headaches, bloating, tiredness and other minor complaints are just a part of life to be endured.

Equally, we might just be going through life thinking nothing’s wrong, that headaches, bloating, tiredness and other minor complaints are just a part of life to be endured.

Situated on a gorgeous little street near Herne Hill station in South London is the London House of Wellbeing, a health clinic that’s all about achieving optimal health with a preventative approach. They provide a whole range of health screening services from vitamin D to gluten tolerance, menopause to thyroid function all under one roof, with qualified pharmacists taking you through the process and giving you all the information you need to live your healthiest life.

It opened in September 2020 and is run by an all-female team of pharmacists, aiming to “disrupt the UK healthcare industry, to encourage people to take a preventative approach to their health rather than a reactive one”.

The clinic offers affordable health screening tests starting at £25, with discounts applicable if you’re booking multiple tests at once, and it also has a social mission to help disadvantaged and vulnerable members of the local community access free health screening by partnering with local charities, including Age UK Lambeth.

I was invited down to the London House of Wellbeing for a health MOT to see how healthy my body really is. So, on a sunny Tuesday morning I hopped on a Thameslink to leafy Herne Hill for a few simple tests to make sure everything is as it should be, and I didn’t really expect anything to be out of the ordinary.

I chose to have an iron test, vitamin D test and gluten test: iron and vitamin D deficiencies are pretty common, the former particularly among women, and the latter particularly in the winter, and I’ve been curious about my body’s tolerance for gluten.

When I arrived, I was greeted by lovely receptionist Rachael, who gave me a quick questionnaire to confirm my personal details and which tests I was getting. I then sat in the comfy waiting area chairs until pharmacist Roma called me in for my tests.
